ATLAS is the biggest of four detectors positioned round the massive large hadron collider. It is a multi-purpose detector which means that it has lots of very different components designed to look for different types of particles.
The particles it looks for are created when the beams of protons accelerated by the LHC are collided in the center of the detector. You can find out more from my website http://www.lhcsound.com, sorry I don’t have time to go on!
