Well, I study stars so it’s very hard for me to argue that my research will be helpful (to people). What I do is use astronomy as a way to try and get young people (and adult learnerrs) more involved in science, and to help them appreciate that science isn’t just dull/boring/hard (like many people in school think).

I use astronomy as a subject which is full of amazing things, like black holes, the Big Bang, alien life etc., and hopefully by making science more fun/interesting/enjoyable, I will help produce the next generation of scientists – and they can be physicists, chemists, biologists etc. – we need all sorts of scientists!

So whilst my research itself can’t really be “helpful”, I hope that the educational work that I do around it will be really useful for helping you to enjoy and understand science better.

My reaseach will lead eventually to new antiobiotics which will help protect people and animals from bacterial infection

This is quite important as bacteria are becoming resistant (not killed) by many of the current antibiotics we use – for example MRSA [Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus] is a bacteria that is resistant to many of our current drugs – so we need to find new ones and that is where my research helps

I am a fashion spotter for environmental trends. Finding out about these early helps my organisation to prepare so that we can protect the environment by reducing risks and taking new opportunities. So I’m working for the environment really! Its important we do this so that we can reduce pollution, improve people’s health, prevent the loss of plants and animals and have a clean planet!
