Yes. I wanted to be lots of things, but science won in the end.

Pretty much. I also wanted to be a dentist for a while. I like learning new stuff, and that’s what science is.

Not really – I liked sports more than science, but a careers teacher told me that science would be a better job. I thought about sports science, which was just becoming a new science area in the UK when I was doing my A levels, but again the careers teacher told me that there woul;dn’t be any jobs in that area, and I believed them, so I gave up on thoughts of being a sports scientist and ended up doing geophysics (the physics of the Earth and planets, atmospheres and oceans) and then after that astronomy.

I do still wonder what it would have been like if I’d stuck with my original plans, but I loved geophysics and I think astronomy is fascinating, so I can’t complain too much! Lots of my friends ended up in the army, which sounded quite exciting at the time, but I think overall I’m very happy as a scientist.

Not always no. I’m pretty sure at some point I wanted to be a Vet or a nurse. But when I became a teenager I really got into science and decided that it could be a good career choice. I had always enjoyed biology and wanted to continue learning about new things in the natural world.
