• Question: How do you feel about IVF?

      It’s an interesting question, especially when you think that we live in a country which is really quite over-populated, and on a planet which has far too many people on it. I can see an argument for saying science should not intervene to help humans have even more babies, but then again, as a parent I can’t imagine what it must be like to not be able to have children.

      I think, if I am totally honest about this, I think IVF is a good thing and people whould have access to it – but there should come a point where they accept that, if it isn’t working, it just isn’t meant to me. But that’s easy for me to say, as I already have 2 children….so I’m not really qualified to have an opinion – but this event is all about us, as scientists, saying what we think….

      I think it offers people who have been dealt a bad hand the chance to become parents. Which is good. If I ever want a family and find out I can’t get pregnant naturally I would consider using it.

      I think it’s an important technology as it allows people who can’t for medical reasons have children

      I suppose the question is, do I think that people should have free IVF? I don’t know. My first feeling is that people should consider adopting, as there are so many unwanted babies out there already. Also the population is going to be to large to sustain if we go on reproducing at the rate we are. I’d be rally sad if I couldn’t have my own baby though..

      I don’t really have an opinion on IVF. In the US it’s paid for by the person who wants to become pregnant, so it’s not a big social issue.
