My research isn’t about global warming – though the bacteria I work on is photosynthetic and people elsewhere in the world are working trying to harness it. A group in america have run a laptopm off a pot of R. sphearoides with a light on the pot – whilst that’s cool commercial electricity generation is a long way off!
How will I stop it personally – well I don’t have a car (I cycle to work!), my workplace has solar panals, I use energy saving bulbs and always turn off stuff when not needed. So try and keep my carbon footprint low.
The organisation I work for (the Environment Agency) is working to both prevent climate change and reduce its impacts.
So we are involved in the regulation of carbon dioxide emissions and look to help the development of low carbon technologies.
But we also make sure people can cope with climate change impacts like increased flooding.
Personally I try to buy local food (with less air miles), minimise water and energy use as much as possible and try and take holidays which don’t involve flying.
I won’t, personally – it’s way to big a problem. But I can help by cutting down on my travel, not using so much energy, and generally trying to be a bit greener – now if we could just get everyone in the USA to do that as well, we might have a chance…
