To be an astronaut you need to travel 100km vertically (and come back down again…). I’ve met lots of astronauts over the past 10 years or so. To be an astronaut, my top tips would be:
Study science, engineering or medicine (to as high a level as you can), or else be a brilliant fighter pilot
Learn Russian
Learn to scuba dive
Work extremely hard in school
Be fit and healthy (but you don’t need to be superfit etc. – just not unfit)
Don’t get travel sick – very messy in a space helmet….
Be American or Russian – sadly, Britain does not support “manned spaceflight”, but we do have 1 astronaut candidate – Major Tim Peake was selected by ESA to be trained, starting in May 2009.
