So severe bruises may, from time to time, result in an uncomfortable, hard lump under the skin after a bad bruise. This is known as a hematoma and is a result of the blood clotting under the skin

Don’t worry though it will go away with time just like the bruise.

I’ve had loads of bruises and lumps over the years (and have a big one on my left knee right now from a bit fat bloke squashing me last night!), from rugby, judo and generally just being a clumsy lump…so I know what you mean when you say there is a wierd lump after the bruising has gone down!

I think this is usually just swelling in the underlying tissue (usually water and blood swells the bruised area I think – that’s why it doesn’t hurt when you touch it). It will probably just go down over the next few days, but if it doesn’t she should get it checked out by the doctor, just in case.

Bumps on the head should be checked out by a doctor quickly though, as your head is quite a sensitive area, so you don’t want any strange lumps there!
