Pretty much anything that isn’t related to my job!

I love sport, so I’m often in the gym or training (I’m an instructor in Chinese martial arts but just recently started doing judo, as my son has been doing that for ~5 years, and it’s great fun, but very, very tiring/painful!). I watch rugby (so not really bothered about this whole World Cup thing), which is quite depressing sometimes when you’re Welsh, as we seem to have a habit of being great one year, and rubbish the next…

Apart from that, I read a lot (I like history stuff, but I will admit to being a science nerd in that I also read a lot of science fiction…and I love Terry Pratchett’s stuff), listen to music (mostly sad old rock music though, given my age – AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chilli Peppers etc.) and try to convince my children that I’m not quite dead from old age yet…

      Spare time?! HAHAHAHA…

I am working with some musicians and artists on making sounds out of the data produced by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. You can listen to the sounds here: http://www.lhcsound.com. Music is my first love really. I think that’s true of lots of physicists. I go the gym when I have time, as it helps me to think. Every Sunday evening me and my daughter get a huge bag of haribo and popcorn and watch Dr Who on iPlayer.

I have to admit that you don’t really get much spare time when you work in high energy physics. Although my flatmate seems to have quite full life… perhaps that’s because he is a theorist..

I’ve started playing more tennis recently now the sun is out. I also go to a street dance class and ballroom dance class (I’m a big fan of Strictly!). I sew a lot and sell my creations – bags, cushion covers, bunting etc – online and at markets which is a lot of fun and really satisfying. I enjoy art, design and style. Being a scientist doesn’t mean you can’t also be creative. To have an outlet for my modest talent is great! I’m learning the banjo. I also really like to chill out and meet up with friends. And of course I love watching box sets. I’m nearly at the end of 24 and will probably move onto True Blood next.

I do lots of things! I often go walking up hills, I watch TV, play on my Wii and meet and have fun with friends.

I also work in theatres in my spare time and in the winter run a number of firework displays

Last night I walked down the river eating ice cream!
