From the science side, it’s discovering something new – like weighing a star or a black hole for the first time ever, or finding a whole new type of object that people had thought about but never seen. that gives you a great feeling, knowing you’ve done something really new.
Nowadays, I get a huge kick out of giving talks to schools and public audiences, especially in really big venues like theatres (I did a talk in the “Mick Jagger Centre” in Dartford a few months ago, which was great fun), or else appearing on TV or the radio to talk about some astronomy or space thing in the news. I’ve met astronauts, politicians, royalty and TV celebs as a result of my work, so that’s pretty good too.
But personally, I love that I can go to work in jeans and a t-shirt every day – I have no fashion sense at all, and working in a university I fit in just fine…!
The feeling you get from helping to protect the environment (rather than making money for some unseen boss). Plus working with a range of people who all share a similar passion but are also really different and come from a range of backgrounds.
