Unfortunately space is a very harmful, dangerous place for humans – it can be freezing cold in the hsadows, boiling hot in the sunlight, there is no air to breathe and no air pressure to keep your insides from squirting out of your eyes, nose, mouth etc.! Not pleasant! A space suit is like a mini-spaceship, supplying pressure and air, but also shielding us from the dangerous radiation in space – this is kept away from us by the Earth’s atmosphere.

Humans live on Earth because it has all the things we need to keep us alive – air, water, food, and an atmosphere that protects us from harmful radiation from space.

The earth is a special place, we have a dense atmosphere around the planet that keeps oxygen and other gasses in close to the surface. We need these to breath. Breathing carries oxygen in through our lungs to our blood supply an up to our brain and muscles where it’s used for all kinds of things.

In space there isn’t as much oxygen and there is very low pressure (a vacuum) so our bodies can’t get enough oxygen to breath and live and we can’t survive in negative pressure, our bodies would be badly damaged.

Space suits provide both breathable air and normal pressure so astronauts don’t die outside of earth’s atmosphere.

We need to be on Earth because Earth has an atmosphere of air that we can breathe, and the Sun keeps it at tjust the right temperature that we don’t boil or freeze.

Most of outer space is unbelieveably cold. Can you imagine -273 degrees C?

Also there is no air, there is just a `vacuum’ so the pressure would cause you to pass out and then die within a couple of minutes if you were out there without a special pressurised suit.

Because space is a vacuum where there is no air so we’d not be able to breathe

There are also lots of UV rays (the same reason we wear sun screen on earth) that as there is no atmosphere are very intense and would burn you if you weren’t wearing a suit. Finally it’s very cold so again you need the suit to keep you warm

As for why we’re not all up in space – well it’s both very hard and expensive to overcome the challenges of going to space / living in space so it isn’t going to become the norm for humans any time soon.

I think I’ll chose to answer the last one if that’s ok!? Wearing a space suit protects the body from the coldness and hotness of space. Plus there is no air to breathe in space so a suit provides that as well. They also provide water to drink and a toilet!
