• Question: why are there gases

      Atoms link together to make molecules because they attract one another. The molecules also attract one another. But when it gets hotter they tend to need more space, so then the molecules move further apart and that is a gas.

      Because the temperature we are at is above their compounds boiling point.

      Ie the heat around us is enough to push the molecules apart to be a gas.

      Matter normally comes in 3 states – solid, liquid and gas. The gas phase is the one where the particles have most freedom to move.

      Infact, there are at least 2 other states of matter that they don’t tell you about in school – a plasma is something like a flame, and there is also a very complicated state called a Bose-Einstein Condensate, so next time your teacher tells you there are 3 states, you can correct them!
