Question: why do hamsters have pouches to carry their food? Surely they can just eat it and go like other animals?

They store it as a way of making sure they have food the future. I’ve heard they can store half their body weight in food in these pouches! Imagine what a human would look life if they did that!

True – but why do you have pockets to store that chocolate bar in?
It’s the same thing – the pouch allows the hamster to store the food for later so it’s got a tasty supply of hamster snacks!

Do they save the food for later or to take back for baby hamsters? I guess, like us, they want to make sure they have food for later – it’s sensible, if you have more food than you need at the moment, to hang on to some for later on, when you might not have a food supply around.
But you’d think they could just use their pockets or get a bag, like we do – I’m not sure I’d fancy food that had been in my mouth for a few hours….
