Question: why would you need new shoes to leave a trapped room?

The shoes I am wearing are a pair of adidas that I have had for 15 years. There is a hole in the left one where my big toe is and the soles are worn down to the point where I can tell what kind of surface I am walking on (gravel, lino, concrete etc.) just by the feel.
